Gov. Perry Will Make Abolition of Sanctuary Cities an Emergency Item in Upcoming Legislative Session

HOUSTON – Today Gov. Perry received the endorsement of the Houston Police Officers’ Union for the 2010 general election. He also announced he will make the abolition of sanctuary cities an emergency item in the upcoming legislative session.

“It is a distinct honor to receive the endorsement of the courageous men and women of the Houston Police Officers’ Union because they exemplify the values of personal sacrifice, integrity and public service that have made our state so great,” said Gov. Perry. “I will not waver in my commitment to protecting our citizens and supporting our state’s courageous police officers with the resources they need to keep our communities safe.”

In his remarks, Gov. Perry assured that abolishing sanctuary cities in Texas will be a priority recognizing that some Texas cities have enacted sanctuary city rules that tie the hands of their police officers as they work to uphold the law. He announced he will make the abolition of sanctuary city rules an emergency item in the next legislative session, which will help ensure that Texas law enforcement professionals have the discretion to use their judgment, honed by years of training and experience, as they work to keep Texas communities safe.

“Gov. Perry appreciates and supports the sacrifices our men and women make on a daily basis,” said Houston Police Officers’ Union PAC Chairman, Ray Hunt. “He has effectively championed our efforts to ensure that Texans have safe and secure neighborhoods. We are proud to endorse Gov. Perry and look forward to working closely with him for another four years.”
