Offers Keynote Address at Texas Rally for Life
AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today spoke at the Texas Rally for Life to highlight the importance of protecting life of the unborn in Texas. He was joined by State Sen. Dan Patrick, State Rep. Frank Corte, Texas Alliance for Life executive director Dr. Joe Pojman, Heidi Group founder Carol Everett and several other pro-life leaders, including more than 3,000 pro-life Texans who were in attendance.
“I am so very proud of the well-deserved reputation Texas has as a pro-life state, and proud that those here today, and people of conscience all across our state, have helped make Texas one of the safest states for the unborn,” said Gov. Perry. “We must continue our efforts to defend life, which include reaching out to our elected leaders and expressing our concerns, and using our votes to support leaders who share our commitment to protecting the unborn.”
Gov. Perry spoke of the increasing threat to pro-life values on the national level, citing President Obama’s reversal of the “Mexico City policy,” which now allows American tax dollars to fund abortions in foreign countries, and a 2009 FDA ruling that permits embryonic stem cell experimentation, even though adult stem cells are proven more effective in medical research. He also called for increased efforts to raise awareness of adoption and renewed support of an sonogram bill that failed to pass the 81st legislative session that would require a physician to perform an obstetric ultrasound on a woman at least two hours before a scheduled abortion.
"The Texas Rally for Life is an opportunity for thousands of Texans to send a message to their elected officials, both here and in Washington, that Texas is pro-life," said Dr. Joe Pojman, executive director of Texas Alliance for Life. "We oppose Roe v. Wade, and we want to protect mothers and their unborn babies from the tragedy of abortion by promoting compassionate alternatives, including adoption."
Perry has signed more pro-life bills into law than any other Texas governor including the Parental Notification bill, which requires a parent to be notified when their minor daughter seeks an abortion; the Prenatal Protection Act, which protects unborn children from assault; and a ban on using tax dollars for abortion procedures. Gov. Perry also supported and signed the Women’s Right to Know Act, to ensure that expectant mothers better understand the risks and consequences of abortion, and an adoption incentive program (2007) to help eliminate the financial burden for families to adopt children in foster care.
The annual Texas Rally for Life recognizes the tragic 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. This decision has resulted in the deaths of more than 50 million innocent unborn children and harm to countless women in America. There are more than 81,000 abortions per year in Texas, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.
