AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today spoke at the Texas Association of Realtors (TAR) Government Affairs Luncheon where he emphasized the importance of upholding conservative fiscal discipline to maintain Texas’ economic strength and thanked the association for their endorsement in his re-election campaign.
“If anyone knows the value of a strong economy, good schools and safe neighborhoods, I’d say it’s realtors,” Gov. Perry said. “So, let’s keep working together to sustain our state’s forward momentum applying our time-tested Texas work ethic, our commitment to fiscal discipline, and our belief in the individual. Together, we will lead our nation out of this tough spot and keep Texas strong.”
Gov. Perry reiterated the principles Texas has upheld to maintain the state’s comparative strength in the struggling national economy, including efforts to attract jobs, keep taxes low, diversify the economy, and stand against Washington’s out-of-control spending.
In his remarks, the governor also thanked TAR for their endorsement and stressed the importance of their involvement in his re-election campaign.
“I genuinely appreciate your endorsement of my candidacy for governor,” Gov. Perry said. “I know that a vote is among a Texan’s most important possessions so I don’t ask for it lightly, but I hope you’ll build on your association’s endorsement by casting your own vote for me so we can keep Texas rolling. Then, I need you to multiply that vote by spreading the word letting your friends and neighbors know the challenges we face and the remarkable opportunity we have to keep setting the example for the rest of our country.”
“A strong housing market is vital to our state’s economy and homeowners throughout Texas. The Texas Association of Realtors is proud to endorse Rick Perry to help keep Texas real estate full of opportunity and growth,” said Brooke Hunt, chairman of the Texas Association of Realtors.
Additionally, Gov. Perry highlighted his recent proposals to maintain Texas’ positive momentum, which include:
- A constitutional amendment requiring a two-thirds vote of the legislature to increase state taxes;
- Making permanent the recent tax cut extended to 40,000 small businesses in the last legislative session (under current law, the $1 million business margins tax exemption will expire in 2011);
- Imposing criminal penalties on employers who knowingly violate employment laws by hiring workers who are in Texas illegally; and
- Paving the way for ongoing job growth by purging unnecessary laws and regulations that stifle Texas entrepreneurs.
The governor further emphasized his ongoing commitment to maintaining a strong, diversified economy; equipping Texas children for the workforce through continued investment in education by upholding accountability in our schools, emphasizing core courses and continuing teacher incentive pay; and filling the gap left by the federal government’s failure to secure our international borders by applying technology and increased patrol resources to fight border crime and a rising tide of gang violence in Texas communities.
