Democrat Sheriffs Endorse Gov. Perry for Re-election

July 26, 2010

FORT WORTH – Gov. Rick Perry today received the endorsement of eight south Texas sheriffs, who announced their support in a press conference preceding the governor’s speech at the Sheriffs’ Association of Texas Annual Training Session.

The governor was endorsed by Terrell County Sheriff Clint McDonald, Jeff Davis County Sheriff Richard McIvor, Pecos County Sheriff Cliff Harris, Culberson County Sheriff Oscar Carrillo, Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West, Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez Jr., Zavala County Sheriff Eusevio Salinas Jr., and Presidio County Sheriff Danny Dominguez.

"One of my guiding priorities throughout my time in government has been to support the men and women who wear the badge making sure they have the support and resources they need to do their job safely and effectively," said Gov. Perry. "A key reason I’m seeking re-election as governor is to continue our progress in the area of safety and security. We are truly fortunate to have sheriffs like these folks here. Given the rigorous training they do and the wisdom they apply in the execution of a very dangerous job, their endorsement carries great weight with our citizens and I am humbled to accept it."

The endorsing sheriffs, all Democrats, cited Gov. Perry’s commitment to border security and his efforts to provide the tools border law enforcement need to battle border crime as the primary reason for endorsing his re-election.

"Gov. Perry has been a dedicated advocate in helping secure the resources we need to battle the criminal elements we face every day along our state’s southern border," said Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West. "In face of a federal government that continues to shortchange us, we know that Gov. Perry will continue to be a faithful provider of the resources we need to keep border crime at bay and our communities safe."

"Texas could have no better person at the helm of its government than Gov. Perry, who has always made law enforcement a number one priority," said Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez Jr. "I look forward to working with him to continue addressing the challenges we face along the border and fighting the crime that threatens the safety of our families and communities."
