Former mayor supports transparency but hides his taxes, then declares “I’m a fiscal conservative” despite leaving a financial mess for Houston that has current mayor considering layoffs
Former Houston Mayor Bill White began his fifth day of hiding his income taxes by denying his record of fiscal mismanagement in Houston.
During an appearance on the Mark Davis radio show, White said, “I’m a fiscal conservative, period. I believe the government should live within its means.”
“Liberal Bill White entered his fifth day of failing to release his taxes by attempting to become a fiscal conservative after years of mismanaging the city of Houston,” said Texans for Rick Perry spokesman Mark Miner. “Bill White’s rhetoric will not replace the reality that he is just another big-spending liberal politician who is out of touch with Texas values.”
White’s comments come just one day after the Houston Chronicle quoted current Houston Mayor Annise Parker criticizing White’s mismanagement of the city. “For years now, we have spent more money than we have taken in,” she said. “You can't spend more than you earn. It is a very unbusinesslike approach to running things.” The Houston Chronicle also reported that Parker “raised the possibility of furloughs and layoffs for city employees for the first time Wednesday, saying the city's dire budget outlook will require City Council to consider all available options for closing roughly $110 million in budget gaps during the next two years.” (SOURCE: “City's budget woes may mean furloughs, layoffs,” Houston Chronicle, 3/11/10, http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/690734...)
