Perry Campaign Launches “Sharks”

October 13, 2006

ArchiveCampaign Update

AUSTIN – Today, Texans for Rick Perry began a television ad
contrasting the positions of Gov. Perry and Congressman Chris Bell on
the issues of taxes and border security. The ad will begin airing in
selected markets across Texas over the weekend and will run for a
significant period of time. The ad titled “Sharks” can be viewed on the Texans for Rick Perry web site at www.RickPerry.org by clicking on multimedia.

“Chris Bell might be getting millions from the scandal plagued trial
lawyer funding his campaign, but he’s as weak as a little lamb when it
comes to taxes and border security,” Perry campaign spokesman Robert
Black said. “It doesn’t matter how many record-breaking million-dollar
checks Bell takes, no amount of money can hide his liberal lust for
higher taxes and less border security.

“Sharks” Transcript:

Voice Over: Just when you thought it was safe… the sharks are back
in the water. A scandal plagued personal injury trial lawyer is
funneling millions of dollars to Democrat Chris Bell.

Chris Bell – One giant Washington liberal. Bell wants to raise your taxes. Rick Perry continues the fight for lower taxes.

Chris Bell voted against securing our border from terrorists and drug gangs. Governor Perry is securing our border.

Chris Bell… wrong on taxes… weak on security… too liberal for Texans.

“Sharks” Fact Check:

“A scandal plagued personal injury trial lawyer is funneling millions of dollars to Democrat Chris Bell.”

“Houston trial lawyer John O’Quinn saved Democrat Chris Bell’s
struggling gubernatorial campaign from financial oblivion this week by
making a record $1 million donation… O’Quinn has promised to raise
another $4 million for Bell’s campaign…” (Houston Chronicle, 10/11/06)

“Chris Bell: One giant Washington liberal”

Congressman Bell was rated as a liberal on economic, social and
foreign policy issues based on his voting record for both years he was
in congress. (National Journal, 2/28/04; National Journal, 2/12/05)

“Bell wants to raise your taxes.”

“He [Chris Bell] acknowledged that the plan would be expensive and
suggested that the property tax rollbacks backed by Republican Gov.
Rick Perry and enacted by the Legislature this summer would have to be
curtailed to pay for it.” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram, 9/23/06)

“Bell said he is not afraid of being attacked for advocating a tax increase…” (Houston Chronicle, 12/10/05)

”’I’m not interested in a revenue neutral plan. If you’re talking
about a revenue neutral finance plan, then you’re basically rearranging
the deck chairs on the Titanic,’ Bell said. Bell said he will provide
details of his school finance plan during the campaign. When asked the
price tag, he said: ‘It’s several billion dollars if you are going to
be serious about improving public schools and meeting some of these
other challenges.’” (Houston Chronicle, December 10, 2005)

“Rick Perry continues the fight for lower taxes.”

Gov. Perry helped pass the largest tax cut in Texas history – $15.5
billion – in the last special session. He has announced an appraisal
reform commission that is developing proposals that will help keep
property taxes low in the future.

“Chris Bell voted against securing our border from terrorists and drug gangs.”

Congressional Roll Call Vote 196, 5/19/04: H.AMDT.532 to H.R.4200
Amendment authorizes the Secretary of Defense to assign members of the
Armed Forces, under certain circumstances and subject to certain
conditions, to assist the Bureau of Border Security and U.S. Customs
Service of the Department of Homeland Security on preventing the entry
of terrorists, drug traffickers, and illegal aliens into the United
States. Agreed to by recorded vote: 231 – 191.

“Governor Perry is securing our border”

In 2005, Gov. Perry funded the Border Sheriffs Coalition’s Operation
Linebacker with $10 million. In February 2006, Gov. Perry launched
Operation Rio Grande and has sent an additional $15 million to border
area law enforcement for a total to date of $25 million for Texas
border security efforts.

As part of efforts to bolster Operation Linebacker, Gov. Perry
announced in October 2005 Texas would ”...enlist the experience and
expertise of the National Guard to provide training and support…”
President Bush requested federal funding for National Guard efforts on
the Border in May of 2006 and Texas signed an agreement allowing Texas
National Guard troops to participate in the federal governments
Operation Jumpstart in June 2006.

Gov. Perry announced on June 1, 2006 that he will ask the Texas
legislature to appropriate an additional $100 million to continue
funding Operation Rio Grande and additional border security operations
for the foreseeable future until the Federal government sends adequate
resources to the border region.

Surge efforts in conjunction with Operation Rio Grande along the
Border have resulted in decreased crime rates ranging from 40% – 70%.
In June 2006, Gov. Perry announced that hundreds of cameras will be
posted along the border to assist law enforcement and be available to
the public via the Internet. The first of these cameras are now
operational.
