Former President George H.W. Bush and Former First Lady Barbara Bush Endorse Gov. Perry for Re-election

October 25, 2010

Join over 100 groups in supporting Gov. Perry for re-election

HOUSTON – Today Gov. Rick Perry received the endorsement of former President George H.W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush for the general election. They were joined by representatives from more than 100 organizations and hundreds of leaders who have endorsed Gov. Perry’s re-election, highlighting his diverse, statewide support, which represents millions of Texans.

“Gov. Perry’s leadership and proven track record is an essential component in keeping Texas a national leader in job creation,” said former President George H.W. Bush. “Texas has become a prime example of what happens when you mix fiscal responsibility, strong leadership and a vision of moving a state forward. It is an honor to endorse Gov. Rick Perry for the general election.”

George H.W. Bush was sworn in as president of the United States in January 1989 and served until January 1993. During his term in office, the Cold War ended; the threat of nuclear war was drastically reduced; the Soviet Union ceased to exist, replaced by a democratic Russia with the Baltic States becoming free; the Berlin Wall fell and Germany was reunified with Eastern Europe; and he put together an unprecedented international coalition to liberate Kuwait.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush is a tireless advocate of volunteerism, helping countless charities and humanitarian causes. Today she and President Bush serve as Co-Chairs of C-Change, an organization that represents more than 150 individuals and groups that fight cancer. She also enjoys reading to children at schools and hospitals across the nation.
“I am deeply honored to receive the endorsement of former President George H. W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush,” said Gov. Perry. “His devotion and leadership, to our country, has brought forth inspiration to us all.”

Gov. Perry’s endorsements highlight the broad-based support he has from diverse groups and industries, ranging from agriculture, health care and retail sales, to construction, law enforcement and education.

In his remarks, Gov. Perry emphasized the creation of 850,000 Texas jobs in the last ten years and the recent drop in the unemployment rate in Texas; leaving the national rate nearly two points above ours. He also touted our state’s low taxes, predictable regulatory climate, fair legal system and education efforts as crucial elements that have helped make it a national leader in exports and Fortune 1000 companies.

Gov. Perry’s Leadership Draws Broad Statewide Support

December 2, 2009

Joins More Than 60 Associations and Conservative Leaders To Tout Vision for Texas’ Future

DALLAS – Gov. Rick Perry today joined more than 60 associations and conservative leaders who have endorsed his re-election to highlight his diverse, statewide support. He also touted accomplishments that have strengthened Texas’ economy and offered his vision to keep Texas moving forward.

“I am deeply honored to have the support of these Texans from fields including agriculture, healthcare, retail sales, manufacturing construction, law enforcement and education, as well as advocates for genuine Texas values, all of whom play an essential role in our state’s future,” said Gov. Perry. “With support like this, anything is possible, and I am genuinely grateful for their endorsements.”

From trade associations including the Texas Municipal Police Association, Texas Association of Realtors and Texas Medical Association, to influential conservative leaders including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, Gov. Perry’s endorsements highlight the broad-based support he has from diverse groups and industries. He also has strong support from the state’s Republican Party leadership, including endorsements from two-thirds of the State Republican Executive Committee leadership, several former chairs of the Republican Party of Texas, and Republican National Committeeman Bill Crocker.

Gov. Perry emphasized his focus on job creation and economic development, noting its importance to maintaining the state’s economic strength and pointing to the state’s low taxes, predictable regulatory climate, fair legal system and education efforts that have helped make it a national leader in exports and Fortune 500 companies.

The governor also spoke against the misguided policies being promoted by Washington, including cap-and-trade and healthcare reform, that would expand government, increase debt and further intrude into Americans’ lives. He noted the important role states should play in offering innovative, effective alternatives to the challenges our nation faces.

“The future well-being of our country resides at the state level with experienced executives leading their states to sustain a climate of innovation while running interference with a federal government run amok,” said Gov. Perry. “That is why I am seeking re-election. I love Texas and I am fully convinced that we have the fundamentals in place to lead our country out of these tough times.”

Moving forward, Gov. Perry reiterated his proposals to make the recent small business tax cut permanent, promote a Constitutional amendment to require a two-thirds vote of the legislature to increase state taxes, root out unnecessary regulations that stifle innovation and investment, and expand the number of STEM schools in the state and UTeach programs at state universities.

Gov. Perry: Vote “Yes” on Propositions 4 and 11 to Strengthen Education and Property Rights

October 19, 2009

Gov. Rick Perry today spoke at the Greater Houston Builders Association Luncheon and urged Texans to vote in this year’s constitutional election. Early voting begins today. He specifically emphasized the importance to vote “yes” for Proposition 4, related to developing more top-tier research universities across the state, and for Proposition 11, related to strengthening Texas landowners’ private property rights.

“To fund the important next step in our efforts to push Texas up the list of top-educating states, we need Texas voters to visit their local polling place and vote for Proposition 4,” said Gov. Perry. “I’ll also be checking the box for Proposition 11 which sustains our state’s forward momentum in protecting private property rights and builds a firewall between the misguided principles of the Supreme Court’s Kelo ruling and our state’s private property owners.”

Proposition 4 will implement the provisions of House Bill 51 from the 81st Legislative session by offering the leaders of emerging research universities a path to Tier One certification. It will also tie funding to key accountability measures, like procurement of matching funding and the attainment of key measures like degrees actually awarded, instead of students enrolled. Proposition 11, based on House Joint Resolution 14, closes off one angle a government entity might pursue to improperly take land by requiring the government to continue having “ownership, use, and enjoyment” of the property so it can’t be handed over to a private party. It also clarifies that “public use” does not include economic development for the purpose of enhancing tax revenues and restricts the government’s ability to extend eminent domain authority.

Hutchison bad for land owners

October 5, 2009

Senator supports federal government taking land from private citizens

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison’s support for big-government takeovers is not limited to approving billion-dollar bailouts for Wall Street bankers, insurance companies, and the automobile industry. She also supports the federal government taking private property from American citizens.

On Sept. 24, 2009, Sen. Hutchison opposed an amendment by Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn to protect land owners and prohibit the federal government from spending $400 million during the next year to acquire additional private property. Among those who supported Sen. Coburn’s initiative to prohibit using these funds for further government acquisition were Texas’ other senator, John Cornyn, and senators from other agriculture-rich states including Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.

“This is another example of Sen. Hutchison saying one thing in Texas and doing another in Washington,” said Texans for Rick Perry spokesman Mark Miner. “She talks about protecting property on the campaign trail in Texas, yet she votes to take property when she is in Washington. The Senator continues to run a campaign of contradictions.”

One week after supporting $400 million for federal land acquisition, Sen. Hutchison did nothing to stop the federal government from withdrawing $742 million in federal highway funding previously provided to Texas.

Over the past 10 years, Congress has appropriated more than $2 billion to increase federal land holdings. The federal government is largest landholder in the United States and now controls more than 29 percent of our nation’s land, with that amount increasing every year. The government’s land stockpile is equivalent to the total combined land of 27 states, with the government owning nearly one in three acres nationwide and one of every two in the West.

Talkin' Texas

Despite a malicious denial-of-service attack on RickPerry.org today, thousands of Texans were able to participate in "Talkin' Texas" and listen to Governor Rick Perry talk about his record and vision for Texas.

Governor Perry reflected on the conservative legislative accomplishments in Texas that have positioned our state for success. If you missed it earlier, you can now watch the live portion of the video for yourself:

Governor Perry today offered several new proposals to maintain Texas’ positive momentum, including:

• A constitutional amendment requiring a two-thirds vote of the legislature to increase state taxes;
• Making permanent the recent tax cut extended to 40,000 small businesses in the last legislative session (under current law, the $1 million business margins tax exemption will expire in 2011);
• Imposing criminal penalties on employers who knowingly violate employment laws by hiring workers who are in Texas illegally; and
•Paving the way for ongoing job growth by purging unnecessary laws and regulations that stifle Texas entrepreneurs.

The event, which garnered more than 22,000 views in spite of the attack, was streamed live from the HOLT-Caterpillar facility in San Antonio. Check back at http://RickPerry.org/talkin-texas and look out for regular updates.

Texas Cattle Feeders Association Beef-PAC Supports Gov. Perry for Re-election

September 28, 2009

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today received the support of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association (TCFA) Beef-PAC for re-election in 2010.

“Governor Perry is a good friend of the Texas cattle feeding industry, and the policies that he has put in place through the years have worked to ensure that our state remains a leader in food and fiber production,” said Beef-PAC Chairman Walter Lasley. “Rick Perry is the person Texans need to continue leading our state.”

Beef-PAC is the political arm of TCFA – a trade association that represents cattle feeders and feedyards throughout our great state. The Texas cattle feeding industry leads the nation, marketing approximately 6 million head or 25 percent of the nation’s fed cattle, and contributes $19 billion to the state’s economy annually.

“Texas is the nation’s number one beef-producing state and home to a cattle feeding industry which our state, regional and national economies all depend upon,” said Gov. Perry. “I’m honored to have the support of Beef-PAC and look forward to working with them to keep the Texas agriculture industry among the strongest in the nation.”

“Texas’ position as a leading producer of our nation’s poultry, egg and dairy goods was not achieved by accident,“ said Texas Poultry Federation Executive Vice-President James Grimm. “Gov. Perry’s willingness to speak out on harmful ethanol mandates and the policies he has put in place over the years have been invaluable to maintaining our industry’s strength and upholding the livelihood of farmers and ranchers across Texas. Defender of Jerusalem Award

This week Governor Perry traveled to Jerusalem where he received the Defender of Jerusalem Award. Created in 2008 by Guma Aguiar, head of the Lillian Jean Kaplan Foundation, the award tributes dignitaries from around the world who have demonstrated strong support for the people of Israel.

"I have long supported the right of a Jewish state to exist in the Middle East, " said Gov. Perry. "After visiting several sacred and historic sites, meeting with business, civic and government leaders and seeing the day-to-day lives of the people on my trips to Israel, I am even more convinced that a safe, secure Israel is an essential part of stability in this part of the world."

Texas, Israel's fourth-largest American trading partner, has built a strong
economic relationship with Israel, especially within the agriculture and natural resource industries. During a visit in 2007, Gov. Perry helped launch the Texas-Israel Chamber of Commerce was created to help launch future commercial interests and solidify the strong business and cultural connections between the two states.

Deer law called a victory for all

August 10, 2009

San Angelo Standard-Times

Jerry Lackey

Legislation aimed at reducing damage to cotton crops by limiting white-tailed deer in fields was signed into law in May by Gov. Rick Perry. Since becoming law, the measure has already proven to be a win-win for both farmers and ranchers in the Concho Valley, said state Rep. Drew Darby.

The new law allows the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department to immediately issue permits to control the deer. The deer can be harvested year-round, provided the carcass is not wasted. The farmer must work with meat processors to save the venison. In turn, the meat is donated to Meals for the Elderly and other charities.

“Deer were costing farmers a lot of money. They could not take care of the problem because of our game laws. It made sense to me that with the right set of rules and common sense, we could bring some order to the problem,” Darby told me. “The farmers’ cash crop is his cotton. The ranchers’ cash crop is the deer.”

What has happened is the farmer, who has fields neighboring a rancher’s pasture, have both come to terms by sharing the cost of building high fences, thereby keeping the deer in the pastures and not in the cotton patch, he said.
